2020 PBA FREE AGENT (TRANSACTION) TRACKER

Should I call this a preseason?

How about a midseason?

How about a pre-post season?

Honestly, I’m glad the PBA is pushing the start of their season to March.

With that said, they could have just scheduled their draft AFTER the Governors Cup Finals. Why have teams speed up the preseason process IF the said process would have been totally UNNECESSARY!

Anyway, this is the totally NECESSARY 2020 PBA Transaction Tracker. I would have said “Loyalty Swap” or "free agent tracker" but for some reason, TT sounds mind-numbingly cool.

I am going to list down all the events that happened AFTER the PBA Draft held last December 8, 2019. If we’re going to flashback for a bit, five players were selected via a special draft with the first five drafting order teams at the forefront and then a regular draft will ensue with the same five teams on top of the list.

Basically, not only did the Columbian Dyip hit paydirt with Isaac Go… said paydirt had a treasure chest underneath it in the form of Fil-Am Roosevelt Adams.

So this is the 2020 PBA Transaction Tracker!

PHOENIX FUEL MASTERS | RECEIVES JAKE PASCUAL
ALASKA ACES | RECEIVES PHOENIX’S 2020 SECOND ROUND PICK

This is basically a salary dump by Alaska to a willing partner. Over the years, Alaska has sent the likes of Calvin Abueva, RJ Jazul, and Cyrus Baguio to Phoenix for either draft picks or budget-friendly players. Jake Pascual is no different.

MAGNOLIA HOTSHOTS | RECEIVES JACKSON CORPUZ
COLUMBIAN DYIP | RECEIVES ALDRECH RAMOS

Aldrech Ramos may have been Chito Victolero’s top dog when he helped the then-Mahindra team attain the best conference in their young PBA journey but I guess this is only because the former San Juan Knight didn’t have Ian Sangalang and Marc Pingris at his disposal. The entry of Aris Dionisio made Ramos expendable. Also, Corpuz is a better fit to play the second-stringer role.

ALASKA ACES | RECEIVES MIKE DIGREGORIO AND TNT’S 2023 SECOND ROUND PICK
TNT KATROPA | RECEIVES SIMON ENCISO

I guess TNT found Mike DiGregorio’s insane field goal attempting a bit much. In terms of facilitating, Simon Enciso is better and in some ways, reminds you of a young Ryan Reyes. DiGregorio is not a shabby player as well – as I see him in the mold of Josh Urbiztondo. But yeah, if my comparison is an indication, there is a reason why Reyes is a TNT player since 2010 and why Urbiztondo has yet to play in the MVP banner.

NORTHPORT BATANG PIER | RECEIVES KELLY NABONG
SAN MIGUEL BEERMEN | RECEIVES RUSSEL ESCOTO

I get this trade for San Miguel. Nabong is a locker room disruptor. They need to find a way to stop the second round of violence between Nabong, Arwind Santos, and Ronald Tubid. Getting rid of the volatile big man is the best option there is. Besides, receiving Escoto is like re-writing the wrongs they did a couple of seasons back when they chose Arnold Van Opstal instead of the FEU banger. AVO would have been the perfect Columbian Dyip big man and Escoto would have been delighted to learn the ropes from the guys he idolized. With that said, I don’t get why Northport would subject their selves to another Kelly Nabong run. I mean, I am not dissing Nabong here as he is a good second-stringer in the mold of former Shell forward Jay Mendoza. But the Batang Pier has had the forward from 2013 to 2015 and from 2017 to 2018. If it didn’t work the first time and it didn’t work for a second time, then what makes them think that this Nabong experiment could work for the third time?

JANUARY 14, 2020

TNT KATROPA | RECEIVES ED DAQUIOAG
RAIN OR SHINE ELASTO PAINTERS | RECEIVES TNT’S 2020, 2021 (FROM NORTHPORT), AND 2022 (FROM SMB) SECOND ROUND PICKS

A week after trading Mike DiGregorio, TNT struck again with Ed Daquioag. I approve of this trade only because TNT has had its share of weak lineups for some time now and moreover, the Elasto Painters have at their disposal Mike Nieto, Adrian Wong, Clint Doliguez, Prince Rivero, and Vince Tolentino. Rain or Shine can package their players with the picks if, for some reason, they want to “trade up”.

JANUARY 16, 2020

BLACKWATER ELITE | RECEIVES RON DENNISON
PHOENIX FUEL MASTERS | RECEIVES BRIAN HERUELA

At the surface, this could have been a one-for-one trade between two barely used players. With that said, Phoenix may have had a diamond in the rough in the Heruela. In case, San Miguel wants to get June Mar Fajardo’s bosom buddy back, then they’ll have a lot to gain in this swap. Perhaps a future first-round pick or a chance to obtain the rights to whatever seldom used star they could pawn? Better yet, Heruela could serve as a compensation package since the Fuel Masters only started their 2019 PBA Draft process in the fourth round.

TNT KATROPA | SIGNS JJAY ALEJANDRO

I don’t know how the former NU star would fare in this scenario but at the moment, he is going to battle for a rotation spot against the likes of Jayson Castro, Bobby Ray Parks, RR Pogoy, Almond Vosotros, JK Casino, Kib Montalbo, and the aforementioned Enciso and Daquioag.

JANUARY 20, 2020

PHOENIX FUEL MASTERS | RECEIVES SOLOMON MERCADO
NORTHPORT BATANG PIER | RECEIVES LA REVILLA AND REY GUEVARRA

Three men, in some ways are going full circle. For almost four months, Mercado was part of Phoenix’s conduit predecessor – Barako Bull Energy. With that said, The Sol-Train is, unfortunately, continuing his journeyman ways. Up next is LA Revilla – and is going to return to the team that drafted him. Much like Mercado, Revilla only lasted a conference in GlobalPort before returning to the D-League. But I guess the suckiest part of this part is Fafa Rey Guevarra – the former Smart-Gilas star who has since moved from team to team to team. From 2012 to 2013, Guevarra has been part of GlobalPort and even its predecessor – Powerade Tigers. All in all, Guevarra has seen action in six PBA teams and one MPBL squad (Muntinlupa Cagers). The 33-year-old Letran Knight could either get released to the MPBL or earn himself his sixth slam dunk title as a seldom-used reserve.
